By M.A. Egge

The services of the national relief aid committee and that of the national 18 May relief (restocking and resettlement) committee are to be unified to ease coordination and avoid overlapping roles.

The imperativeness of dealing as a unit to address the situation was quite important, says Somaliland Minister of Presidency Hon:Mohamoud Hashi Abdi

This was revealed over the week when both committees held a joint meeting at the Presidency with the line ministries which was graced by the attendance of officials of the United Nations.
In two separate meetings held at the Presidency concerning the draught and post-drought relief aid efforts, the team charged with the task of distribution, coordination and soliciting for drought relief aid gave their closing accounts in a balance sheet that was verified as articulate.
The Presidency Minister Hon. Mohammed Hashi Abdi noted at the function that at least the committee that comprised of eminent personalities drawn from the clergy, entrepreneurs and civil society had at least acknowledged the tough coordination tasks that the government was bestowed upon.
He commended them for their diligence and asserted the need for stepping up transparency and accountability.
In the subsequent second meeting of the day that brought all the stakeholders together, the minister talked of the importance of unifying the services of both committees for better coordination.
He said that the imperativeness of dealing as a unit to address the situation was quite important.
One committee was mainly charged with the task of distributing the relief aid during the famine.
The other committee is mainly tasked with the job of fundraising for the improvished populace, help resettle them and restock and replenish their depleted livestock.
The deputy presidency minister noted that the meeting had the consensus of unifying the planning and execution of the programs.
The 18 May committee is to work on ways and means of combating future famines by fundraising for the construction of dams, wells, restocking, replenishments and subsidization of agricultural farming.
